The New York Times has a great before and after graphic of the Washington Mudslide. I tried to re-create it as an exercise to see how quickly I could put it together. The hardest part is choosing/finding the proper photos, I don’t have the great resources of the NYT. This is my version created in Edge Animate.
I chose to use the responsive feature in Edge Animate but the better method is the media queries like they did in the NYT. The images work best on a big screen and really get mushed up as they size down. Notice how the text portions also remain readable in in smaller browsers.
I would have chosen to displayed the text right next to the numbered locations using the show & hide features in the Edge API, which allows you to easily add more number locations as the story unfolds/changes & gives more interactive feel to the story.
The spotlight feature offered with Edge Commons opens up other ideas like adding some video or photos, but I think the NYT nailed it by using these two photos to show how massive the destruction is.
